For most Hikers in Illinois it’s often difficult to find a scenic, long, and exhausting trail to find. Especially if you live in Central Illinois where the nearest drive lots of acreage is the Shawnee National Forest 5 hours away. However, a new trail called the Illinois River Bluff Trail has taken root thanks to some Grant Funding from the State. The Peoria Park District (second largest in the State) has developed a 3 phase trail that when it’s finished will be more than 9 miles in length. Already, phase I, and II have been completed. Phase III will connect the Forst Park Nature Center creating almost a 10 mile trail one way. One could consider this a backpacking trail with a awesome Campsite/Cabin at Camp Wokanda at the end or beginning or your hike.

Some of the elevations of this trail go up 1,000 ft which can make you breathe a little hard. This is an easy trail, but it’s even better if you need a good training hike to get into shape for a thru-hike. Moreover, if you are looking for a place to see some awesome Fall Foliage, this is the hike for you. Bring plenty of water, and a snack. Don’t forget, if you start from Camp Wokanda, it’s a 4 mile trek one way to the end, where you’ll have to turn around and hike back to your car.

Camp Wokanda is off of Illinois Rt 6. Look for Hwy 29 or Galena Rd. There is a sign directing you to Camp Wokanda off of Hwy 29. (if you are going North, turn Left at sign)
