For those of us who like to do a little “raz-ma taz” out in the Wilderness while cooking, this is one video I had to post. We’ve seen How to Cook Pizza, or how to make real Bacon & Eggs, but this is really going the extra distance.

Maddythegoose.com shows us how to make Shepards Pie out in the backcountry.

Here is the normal recipe to get an idea of the ingredients for Shepards Pie.

Shepherds pie and Cottage pie are traditional methods for using leftover roasted meat with mashed potato as pie crust. The use of uncooked meat such as mince meat is a fairly recent adaptation. While a variety of meats can be used for this dish, it is traditionally made from beef or lamb with the lamb version being known as shepherd’s pie and the beef version known as cottage pie. Below is a recipe for shepherd’s pie. To make a cottage pie simply substitute the minced lamb with minced beef.

1 onion, diced
– 1 tablespoon olive oil
– 1 lb. (450-500g) lamb, minced
– 1 clove garlic, crushed
– 1 large carrot, diced
– 1 beef stock cube
– 1 lb. (450-500g) chopped tomatoes
– 1 tablespoon corn flour
– 3 tablespoons tomato puree
– pinch of salt and pepper
– 2 (900g) potatoes
– 1 stick butter

What can I say? I love being out in the Backcountry. I am the crazy guy that likes hiking and camping in bad weather. One of my all time favorite hikes is the Appalachian Trail.
