Each year in May, the tiny town of Damascus grows to be one of the most populated towns in the Commonwealth! We are invaded and our quiet little town becomes one of the most amazing places you can imagine. We are blessed to become the temporary home to some incredible people. Many are hiking the Appalachian Trail. Many have hiked before, some many, many years ago. Some just come because of the festival. But all are drawn to our little town by the AT.
In the spring of 2001, First Baptist Church Damascus hosted a creation seminar. We invited one of the presenters, Dr. Jim Gardner, to come to Trail Days to spend some time with the hikers. We built a bonfire in town and grilled hotdogs. From that simple offering, God has grown this ministry to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of many- church family, hikers, and visitors alike.
We are so blessed to literally sit on the AT and by the many who God sends our way. We feel that this ministry is God’s gift to us and we are thankful.
On a personal note: Having been to Trail Days in 09, I can attest to how much everyone in town gave. It truly was a spiritual experience witnessing how giving this church was to hikers, and travelers alike.
