Winchester mountain is an easy and scenic summit. It’s located in the Mt. Baker - Snoqualmie National Forest One of the last fire-lookouts in the region stands on the summit. Views are spectacular including Larrabee, The Border Peaks, Baker, Shuksan, Goat, Sefrit, Tomyhoi and more. This is also one of the easiest hikes on Hwy 542 gaining only 1,300ft from twin lakes*. Few places offer such a fulfilling alpine experience with such little effort.
This hike is great all year. In Summer or Autumn it’s a trail hike and in Spring or Winter its a snow climb. In Spring be very carefull crossing drainages on snowbridges and watch for holes created by melt-out around small trees and rocks. Also be carefull as wet slides and sluffs can occur here
Our last over-night adventure was back in October when the Autumn colors were at their peak. Ranger Mike invited us to his stomping groups in the North Cascades, where he chose a hike that was up near the Canadian border. The plan was to car camp close the trailhead Friday night, then the Saturday morning hike to the top of Winchester Mountain. With any luck, we’d find an empty Historic Lookout Cabin to spend the following night in.
