This trip will involve hiking approximately 4-5 miles on a Saturday and approximately 3 miles on a Sunday. The purpose of this class is to GET TO KNOW YOUR GEAR! The terrain where we will be backpacking in comprises some rolling hills and can be strenuous at times. The trails may also be wet, slippery, muddy, and rocky. We give hands on instruction including a Pack Shakedown. Please review our Beginners Backpack Bootcamp post to see what the class is about.

Keep in mind that backpacking is an intense cardiovascular activity that may involve a variety of potential health and safety risks. While organizers, event hosts, and other trip participants may help to facilitate trip planning and logistics, each trip participant must know his/her own capabilities and is solely responsible for his/her own safety.

We will meet at a designated Trail Head that will be e-mailed to participants when booking the class. Each class can have different locations. Depending on weather and camp availability, each bootcamp can have different locations. We will always let  you know at least 7 days before the class starts on exact directions and locations. We always meet 30 minutes before class starts.

On Day One: We start “Pack Shake Down” at 11:00 AM – We will go over gear and goals of the weekend. After shakedown, we will drive up from the campground (carpool) and start our hike at the Trail Head. After “shake down” we go over the rest of the weekend and specific task’s and itinerary.

About Instructor

Ariane Petrucci has been exploring the outdoors for over 10 years. “The outdoors is my playground”. I’ve specialized in rock climbing, backpacking and Kayking, and I absolutely love it all!  I’ve explored all over the U.S including the Kalalau Trail in Kauai to name a few. I have Kayaked and led trips into the Okefenokee Swamp many times. It’s one of my favorite places to go. I absolutely love teaching and making new outdoor friends.
I have my Wilderness First Aid Certification through SOLO and am a certified as a Leave No Trace Trainer. I spent 25 minutes in December in the smoky mountains in a creek to earn my Wilderness Survival Certificate with BigPig Outdoors Well, I had to start a fire with a wet fire starter first…you know, before graduating.

Ariane is an excellent teacher. she definitely knows what she is talking about. I really thought this was going to be hard, but she taught in a really fun way. The trail was beautiful and I learned so much. Everything that she said about weight is so true. I learned how to carry less and trust more. Since I took this class, I have gone out twice by myself and had great confidence doing so. Thanks Ariane 🙂

Wasn’t really expecting such a good time when I signed up, Huge surprise!!! We had a blast. For those who want a very intimate class with a personal touch, this is a great class to learn from. Scott and Ariane go way beyond the call of duty when it comes to making sure you really learn the art of backpacking. Their focused on MY GEAR and how to get comfortable with it and suggested great tips on how to multi use it. So happy I took their class instead of REI’s.

Scott & Ariane are the BEST! Ariane is patient and is really passionate about teaching others. We had a lot of laughs and good times. We had amazing views, camped by a beautiful stream and talked around the campfire. She really made this event great. Scott surprised us at the endpoint and cooked Brats for us. Awesome!!! I signed up thinking I knew how to pack my backpacking from watching a ton of YouTube videos…I was wrong. I learned that watching a video is much different than getting out there listening to an expert. Thank you guys!!!! Happy Trails
